Pond Dipping

On Monday 9th of May 2016 class two went pond dipping in Mr Dougan’s garden pond.  At the pond we saw all sorts of creatures.

Imi bravely caught a female pregnant newt which was surprisingly small. The male newt had spots and a flat tail, but the female newt has a more rounder tail and no spots.

Next we found that tadpoles are black and they wiggle to swim. The biggest amount of tadpoles that one pond dip had was 33, how exciting! Did you know that when tadpoles grow up they turn into frogs? Hero actually caught a frog. It’s dark skin was shiny and it jumped really high.

One of our friends gently caught a dragonfly larva (or nymph). We learned that dragonfly nymphs  stay in the water for a long time and then shed their skin like a snake to became dragonflies.

“It was a pleasure to dip in Mr  Dougan’s pond, and I even caught a  water dragon!” said Ted.

Lottie caught a leaf with lots of snail eggs on it. They were transparent and gooey. They looked slimy!

We learned lots of new things and enjoyed our trip very much. Thank you for spending time with us Mr Dougan, it was an afternoon to remember!
